@joepolitz @sundararajan_a @IanArawjo I am teaching CSE 30 (Intro to computer Systems) at UCSD this quarter and I will have students who come in with both 1) Python and Java or 2) just Java background. Sounds like a fun thing to look into.

@sundararajan_a @IanArawjo Right — another answer to the question is “yes”. If they start in Python they’ll have trouble with pointers and memory in C/C++. If they start in C they will have trouble as well, or Java, or Python, or Racket…

CS profs, is it true that if students start learning programming with Python, they will go on to have a lot of trouble understanding low-level concepts such as memory and pointers in langs like C++?
