@The11kaj @mattgurney Quite possibly, although I wouldn't describe the recent posturing from our leadership as neutral. I guess we'll see

"Americans" might be at large, but they elected an erratic president, and the current U.S. administration serves him with full devotion. We could probably cut a deal with MAGA Republicans. No one can cut a deal with Trump and have any confidence it'll hold.
Asher Honickman@Honickman

I've not heard this assumption expressed. OTOH, the govt seems to be operating on precisely the opposite assumption - that the Americans only act in bad faith. The "realist" presumption that ought to guide our approach is that the Americans are self-interested rational actors.

Don't know about you guys, but even as our household income has massively increased in the past 5 years, our standard of living has largely stagnated or gotten worse in some ways. That started under COVID policy and just never stopped, with or without Trump.

@MiniWrongThink @AydinPaladin China's been stockpiling oil, a million barrels a day for over a year. They'll be able to wait this out much longer than anyone, most countries who depened on strait oil will be screwed, as will we all when prices spike

The rest of the world already did that when they refused to help. People are freaking out, but they’re not understanding what the actual strategy is here.. China gets 40%—45% of its oil through the Strait. This was before their access to Venezuela was cut off. There’s a reason Iran was allowing Chinese vessels to go through. CHINA was already reported as being the very reason, aka pressure, for Iran, being willing to go into talks in the first place. By blocking off access to everyone, specifically China, the United States what’s the leverage of Strait back on China, who is desperate for oil now.

Last week the MAGA narrative was that the lazy, cowardly Europoors needed to go get their own oil. France said "okay", brokered a deal, and sailed on through. Other Euro countries started doing the same. Now the US is going to blockade the Strait and intercept vessels from Euro and Asian countries that made such deals. The rest of the world was trying to do what Trump demanded, but no, the whole planet must suffer for Bibi's war. America and Israel have declared themselves enemies of the world. There is no other way to look at it.
Disclose.tv@disclosetv

JUST IN - Trump orders the U.S. Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz to "any and all ships trying to enter, or leave." Also instructing the U.S. Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran: "No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas."

The Federal Housing Advocate has advised the government to set a target date to resolve the middle-class housing crisis by... 2060. 34 years from now. This means a Grade 10 student will have to wait until they're 50 to afford a home. chrc-ccdp.gc.ca/resources/news…

@xwanyex @aqx0c As someone with callouses, using a shovel vs your hands is absolutely a difference in kind, just as travelling by boat is different than just trying to swim across the atlantic ocean

Yes, literally. A shovel cannot dig. A shovel isn’t magic. What happens when you use a shovel instead of your hands is not a difference in kind. That does not at all suggest that it’s not an important technological innovation that can (and did) have large impacts on society. It’s just to say that it’s ordinary technological progress.

What’s currently cooking the brains of every smart AI booster is the idea that if LLMs autocomplete good enough, then that magically becomes something different in kind. But there’s no evidence for this. It’s just breathlessly asserted over and over again on the basis of thought experiments.
