@adamramdin @DeanCullinane @anthony_bosman Like I said in the OP, 10-12 years max. But other than that, yes. “Let them…” as if they don’t possess freewill. People are wired differently. Some look forward to the quiet retirement years while others work until the very end.

@dasscherick @DeanCullinane @anthony_bosman Interesting. So you are ok with a 75 year old President but a 48 year old who is extremely gifted but has already served 8 years needs to retire? I don’t think the church should be asking or expecting people to serve beyond retirement. Let them enjoy their kids/grandkids!

I’m not persuaded on the value of age limits for elected offices. It’s arbitrary. The effects of age on cognitive ability and decline vary significantly. Many people retain near-optimal cognitive function, resilience, and recall through their seventies and beyond. And wisdom generally increases with age, along with experience, of course.

@dasscherick @DeanCullinane @anthony_bosman Perhaps a better solution is not to elect leaders who are past retirement age. In the UK you'd never elect a 70+ year old as the culture is once you hit 67/68 yrs old you have to retire, but in the US working well into your 70's is normal

@adamramdin @DeanCullinane @anthony_bosman While I tend to disagree with your assessment, as I understand it, no term limits is not the answer to the problem, such as it is, that you’re describing.

@dasscherick @DeanCullinane @anthony_bosman I am not sure the best answer to the evident issue, though my point is term limits do not solve all problems. Some Conf in the US already have them and they have not been fool proof at all, such as when there has been no adequate replacement but you have to change as per policy

Not really, because if the US president, for example, goes entirely overboard this doesn’t bode well for his *party’s* prospects for reelection. And the long-term implementation of any president’s agenda significantly hinges on his party retaining that office (and other elected offices) in future (preferably consecutive) terms. He knows this. The upside of term limits for all elected offices far exceeds any potential downsides, in my view.

@DeanCullinane @dasscherick @anthony_bosman The challenge of term Limits is in the last term the president can, to a certain degree, do whatever they like or attempt to, knowing they don’t have to try to get back in. Like a certain bigger president is currently doing

@dasscherick @anthony_bosman Exactly. 12 is perfect. 5 year term. 5 years if re-elected. And if you’re re-elected again you have only 2 years to ensure a clean handover to the incoming for that position.
