I am resuming my book related posting as first proofs are in and I’m just waiting on final proofs and my students’ final papers. Today a tidbit about Jeanne Demarsy, who I profile in the book. I even found one of her outrageous bills for lingerie which made international news!

@dr_cdeutsch Though romanticizing farming isn't new. You see it already in the 18th century and into the 19th cent. It seems to go hand-in-hand with urbanization.

The current social media trend of romanticizing agricultural labor is absolutely fascinating. They offer a very narrow and historically unintelligible version of farm work that makes it all about white land owners on self-sustaining farms. Farming is harder work than that.

Based on the condition and style I’m positive this isn’t 300 years old. I bet its a late 19th or early 20th century dressing gown.
Still a beautiful piece and lovely to see even a 100ish year old antique in such good condition get some spotlight like this!
