Protests have exploded against President Rodrigo Paz as economic collapse and fears of political repression push the country toward crisis. Starting on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, indigenous groups, miners, campesinos, unions and civilian protestors call for the resignation and removal of the US-Backed President. The workers also demand that transnational corporations withdraw from Bolivia, urging that they won’t allow the privatisation of the country’s natural resources. The groups are blocking roads and clashing with police, as President Paz has openly welcomed security assistance linked to Argentine President Javier Milei, including reported aircraft, tear gas, & security equipment. Bolivia faces fuel shortages, inflation, falling wages and rising poverty. Former Bolivian President Evo Morales says the U.S., DEA, and Southern Command backed a plan to kidnap or kill him, which prompted protestors to create human barriers in order to protect him. With the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro in January, South American countries have been on full alert for US military interventions in support of right-wing governments in the region.

Ghana’s Former Defence Minister Admits Signing U.S. Military Access Deal Ghana’s former Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, now a Member of Parliament under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), admitted on March 11, 2026, that he signed the now-controversial 2018 Defence Cooperation Agreement. The agreement allows the United States to stage, train, and deploy its troops in Ghana, as well as maintain a West Africa Logistics Network, effectively a U.S. military base, on Ghanaian soil. Although many, including some Ghanaians, do not view the security arrangement between Accra and Washington as a military base, the former minister-turned-MP openly acknowledged its existence. Nitiwul’s admission came after Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) disclosed at Chatham House in London on March 9, 2026, that the Nigerian and U.S. governments had reached out to the John Mahama-led administration to collaborate on the December 25, 2025, airstrikes in Nigeria by U.S. forces. While the foreign minister’s disclosure confirmed that Ghana had been invited to collaborate with the United States and Nigeria, he did not say whether Ghana accepted the invitation. Nitiwul, alongside Samuel Abu Jinapor, has since called for parliamentary ratification of the 2018 security agreement, the same agreement he confirmed signing in 2018 as defence minister under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

A UN-backed report indicates that 1.24 million people in Lebanon—nearly a quarter of the population—are expected to face acute food insecurity at crisis levels or worse between April and August 2026. This represents a sharp rise from the 874,000 people (17%) experiencing hunger in March 2026. Following a six-week war that killed over 2,500 people and forced over a million to flee, the situation remains dire. Agricultural losses are estimated at $11 billion, and years of economic crisis have exhausted household resources. Over 580,000 Syrian and Palestinian refugees, along with 390,000 displaced children, are at high risk. High-severity hunger is concentrated in Baalbek, El Hermel, Akkar, Baabda, Bent Jbeil, Marjaayoun, El Nabatieh, and Tyre.

AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY
AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY@AfricanArchives·
48 years ago, Stephen Bantu Biko, an anti-apartheid activist, and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement died in a prison cell in Pretoria. 20 years later, an Apartheid Security Police, Gideon Nieuwoudt, admitted to murdering him. Steve Biko was born in 1946, in King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. As a medical student at the University of Natal, he was involved with the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) and went on to found the South African Students’ Association (SASO). At a time when the African National Congress and Pan-Africanist Congress were banned by the government, SASO filled the political vacuum by evolving into the Black Consciousness Movement. In 1972 Biko was expelled from the university, and the following year he was banned by the authorities. Despite this, he played a key role in organizing the protests that culminated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976. He helped to unite over 70 black consciousness groups which helped to develop the Black Consciousness Movement and help advance the liberation struggle..building a vanguard party. He was banned between 1975 and 1977 and caught, arrested and in police detention September 12, 1977 after being beaten mercilessly, he slipped into a coma to his death! Although Biko never lived to write his memoirs, he left behind some revealing documents. African Lives includes a portion of an interview Biko gave to an American businessman a few months before he was detained and beaten to death. He was assassinated because he represented power of Africa Unity and the black consciousness and courage of the people!!! Long live the life, consciousness, courage and contributions , legacy of Stephen Bantu Biko...may his spirit live and manifest in future generations!. UHURU!
