When the figure was excavated from the Baths of Caracalla in 1546 it was missing its legs, so Michelangelo’s protégé Guglielmo della Porta was commissioned to sculpt a new pair.
His replacements were deemed so magnificent that when the authentic ancient legs were discovered shortly after, Michelangelo himself convinced the owners to reject them, arguing that the modern craftsmanship actually surpassed the antique.
The real legs languished in the Borghese collection for over two hundred years and were only finally reunited with the body in 1787.
