India exports about $87 billion a year to the US, mainly textiles, pharma, gems & jewellery, auto parts, chemicals. Due to the tariffs, our exporters will lose price competitiveness, resulting in fewer orders, possible job losses, and lower earnings. Pressure on export revenue could weaken the rupee further, making imports costlier and adding to inflation. Sectors like apparel, pharma, and auto parts, which rely heavily on the US market, will be under immediate stress. What can India do? Retaliate with its own tariffs on US goods, push to restart trade talks, cut deals with other big markets like the EU, Gulf, and ASEAN, offer export incentives and rupee support to cushion domestic industries, or the best, shut down McDonald's in India.
