every time someone cancels a meeting with me during march madness, I feel like I've found a kindred spirit (and just assume they're doing it to watch basketball)

will deepfakes / AI bots drive a return to IRL? esp as quality improvements make it more challenging to identify in real time, anytime the person matters, not just the output (interviews, dating, meetings), likely moves back to happening live

At this rate I’d be shaking in my boots if I were the Ozempic CEO. Dropping like flies. No way he makes it to Christmas.

The internet convinced people that whining / complaining was equivalent to having a point of view, and that’s where discourse falls apart

Josh McDaniels was fired by the Raiders, but how it happened is the more interesting story. This has to be the craziest way a coach has been let go

My five year old came home Friday, saw a Star of David I had put up on our window facing the street, ripped it down and tried to throw it out. This is a kid who used to be proud of being Jewish. Who asked to put a mezuzah on our door. "I don't want to be Jewish!" "It's bad to be Jewish." It was a hard night. I racked my brain - did someone say something? did he hear something? And then my wife and I realized, he'd internalized that people had attacked and killed Jews for being Jews. Which meant, being a Jew was... dangerous. And what we see in these tiny moments of antisemitism, which too many people now feel not just justified but righteous in expressing, is that he isn't wrong. As the war and infowar continue (remarkable to me we are still parroting Hamas-reported data as fact everywhere), the inevitable and scary thing is that right now, it feels like this is going to get a lot worse before we have a chance of it getting better.

This is a tiny taste of what anti-semitism feels like

A mini-essay on the rise of Ozempic and its aftereffects: To start with, a fascinating stat: Levi's CEO said last week that 40% of people had a change in waist size from the pandemic. America clearly has an obesity problem. In 1990, zero states had obesity rates above 20%. In 2018, zero states had obesity rates *below* 20%. (Check out the map of the US below.) 2023 has been the year of Ozempic. The rise of obesity treatment drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, has been stunning: ➡️ Today, 4% of the U.S. population is taking a GLP-1 drug ➡️ Usage is growing 111% year-over-year ➡️ 373,000 new prescriptions are written each week The Economist estimates that by 2031, the market for GLP-1 drugs will be over $150B. For perspective, that’s on par with the market size for all drugs used to treat cancer ($185B in 2021). Given that 40% of the world’s population is overweight or obese, there’s clearly room for growth here. And the market will swell if insurers reimburse the cost, which seems likely: ➡️ A 5% reduction in weight can cut an obese person’s medical costs by $2,000 per year ➡️ A full transition from obesity to healthy weight saves nearly $30,000 in annual medical costs ➡️ Depression rates among obese children are double those of average-weight kids The big winner so far is Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic & Wegovy. (Ozempic is the name of the drug used to treat type 2 diabetes that also has weight loss effects; Wegovy is the name of the drug specifically prescribed for weight management.) Last month, Novo Nordisk passed LVMH as Europe's most valuable company for a time ($336B market cap right now). But there also startups rising to the occasion. @Ro is propelling widespread adoption of obesity drugs. @nourish, a marketplace for dietitians covered by insurance, sees tailwinds from GLP-1 agonists. And the downstream effects are fascinating to study: Gym memberships might decline. Ozempic users see a massive reduction in snack food consumption; Walmart is already reorienting its product mix to take account for the Ozempic effect. And one other wild effect: it’s estimated that United Airlines would save $80M a year in fuel costs if its customers lost an average of 10 pounds. We're only in the early innings of GLP-1 agonists and their impact across society. It'll be fascinating to follow the businesses that emerge as a result of these drugs, and the first-, second-, and third-order effects of their widespread adoption.
