
Koreans are boycotting Starbucks after their recent campaign "Tank Day" embroiled in controversy for allegedly mocking the 18 May Democratization movement. The promotion drops on the same day of the 46th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratization Movement (18 May) The word "Tank" evokes ChunDoohwan military junta, which deployed military armored vehicles to bloodily surpress citizens during the movement. The tagline "Slam it on the desk" also drawn criticism for being reminiscent of the statement of the National Police Head Quarters, where they denied using torture on ParkJongCheol in 1987 which cause his death, "I slammed on the desk, he gasped and died." Koreans started boycotting and discarding Starbucks products they had.
