@ChrisMartzWX I guess you haven’t learned yet what happens when the surface area to volume ratio of a melting object increases? Long story short, melting speeds up. It’s why smaller ice cubes melt faster than big ones.

Hi again, Mike. 👋 Let’s go over this for what’s now a third time. Maybe it will sink in. The Greenland ice sheet contains about 2.9 million gigatons (Gt) of ice. 🧊 Using the conversion factor that 1 Gt = 1 billion tons, this means that the ice sheet has roughly 2.9 million billion tons of ice. Oh yes, math is involved!! Now, if the ice sheet is losing 30 million tons of ice per hour, that would work out to 720 million tons of ice lost per day and a net 262.8 billion tons per year. 🫠 Here’s the math, 🫳 -30 million tons × 24 hr. (1 day) × 365 days (1 year) = -262.8 billion tons / year 262.8 billion tons of ice lost per year? Oh my, that sounds scary! 😱 That is, of course, until you realize that at the current rate, it would take more than 11,035 years for the entire Greenland ice sheet to melt. 🏔️ ➡️ ⛰️ = >10 millennia Let’s do more math to confirm this. 2.9 million billion tons / (262.8 billion tons / year) ≈ 11,035 years. Now, what would this mean for sea level rise (SLR)? 🌊 Well, according to NASA, for every 360 Gt (or 360 billion tons) of ice lost, the global average sea level rises by about 1 millimeter (mm). 🔗 sealevel.nasa.gov/understanding-… If 262.8 billion tons of ice is lost per year, that would mean sea level rises at a rate of 0.73 mm (~0.03 in) / year from loss of Greenland ice alone. 📏 Ignoring Antarctica, this would cause the global average sea level to rise about 1 ft. every ~417.5 years. Now, the rate of ice loss could accelerate or decelerate depending on other factors (e.g., natural variability or positive / negative climate feedbacks), but it’s clear from these back of the envelope calculations that you are hyperventilating over nothing. This is a very manageable problem. So is your climate anxiety. Just stop parroting WEF propaganda and go touch grass.

@DrERatcliff @uarizona Yeah, lots of wind but no damage. We fortuitously cut down a tree that was leaning next to the house a few weeks back; I doubt that one would have made it through.

@General_JWJ Yes, traditional Si-based PV isn’t the best to use for agrivoltaics, but if you are interested, I would recommend reading up on semi-transparent photovoltaics. It might make you a bit more optimistic on the idea overall.

Learned of a concept called agrovoltaics where you put photovoltaic panels in the middle of fields and grow food beneath/between them, and the two farms in my area who tried it both went bankrupt because it tanked their yields. Very promising!

@Yanan_Lynn is now off to Dartmouth to postdoc with the Scheideler group. She was a fantastic first PhD student who set the bar very high for all future students. One way she is unlikely to be surpassed is in her going away gift to me. It’s glorious. 😂

Yesterday was an exciting day as @Yanan_Lynn defended her dissertation! Yanan was my first doctoral student and she has been amazing to work with. We will miss her as she goes off to start a postdoc at Dartmouth with Will Scheideler’s group in June. Congrats Dr. Li!!

Metal halide perovskites deform inelastically during thermal cycling? Apparently so! Read the latest by our group from lead author Anton Samoylov in @ACSEnergyLett. We highlight some surprising thermomechanical behavior in this one. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

So one of my grad students was excited to find out the results of his NSF GRFP application. He’s a great student with a strong background in research and outreach. So he searched “NSF” in his email box today and found an email that they sent over the winter break. He was shocked.
