19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

@38Godfrey Lazy tweet. Give me substance. Who do you think would be a good person to lead a bipartianship group to figure it out?

It can’t be bipartisan when there was unequal representation from both parties and the party not present and Supreme Court were criticized and blamed. We may never solve this, but without unity we absolutely won’t. Why is this even a partisan issue? Sports are American. The math will not work out to pass the legislation we need until we make this issue purple.

DeSantis said this is a bi-partisan issue, Sankey said it’s non-partisan. “We cannot go on any longer on this circumstance … we’ll fracture more if we fail to act.”

Talarico is going to tear the GOP apart at this rate simply because he truly follows the Bible and doesn't use it as a prop like Republican leaders. Keep retweeting his old scripture readings, please. It's making Texans question the GOP view of Christianity, which is GREAT NEWS!

Great advice. It’s a lifestyle built on using food as fuel and seeing your body as a machine. I like the term “releasing” weight because if you frame it as losing it, you may find it again—building new permanent lifestyle habits based in moderation is sustainable. All or nothing thinking is how yo-yo diet culture remains a multi billion dollar industry in the US

I wish everyone, like you, would just be a good human and realize that it’s OK to change how you see the world based on how the world operates in 2026, and evolve. That’s really all any of us are asking. When you get more information, decide if you’re gonna stick to old ways of thinking or perhaps the open influence.

For those who notice or have experienced progressing vision decline with age, what age did it plummet? I feel like my eyes are on the giant slalom toward Coke bottle lenses or Lasik.

It’s the sugar n empty calories. To be honest, yes, there’s other chemicals with the phosphates, especially if you have some borderline renal function, but if that’s not the case and it helps, you get through this big life change, I’m big on giving yourself some things that don’t make you feel deprived for long term success. g eliminate the things that are doing the most damage and give yourself some built-in moderation so that you can stick with it. So if Coke Zero helps you kick regular soda, do it. Biggest enemy to weight loss: empty calories and alcohol. If your liver is having to process alcohol, which unfortunately has zero nutritional value and is essentially a poison, it doesn’t have any space to metabolize your food in a productive way. It’s kind of the game changer
