There’s virtually no voter fraud because, for over a century, nonpartisan election commissions have validated registrations and ensured clean voter rolls. The “SAVE Act” requires “documentary proof of U.S. citizenship” for voter registration.
Sounds good, right?
Section 2(a) lists the acceptable documents, which must explicitly indicate citizenship. Standard driver's licenses and REAL IDs do not qualify on their own as they do not indicate citizenship status.
The bill indicates the key documents that show or indicate citizenship include:
- A “valid United States passport” (directly shows citizenship) - 52% of Americans don’t have one.
- A “REAL ID-compliant form of photo identification” that “indicates” the applicant is a United States citizen (standard REAL IDs do not indicate citizenship; only 5 states use "enhanced" versions with this indication.
- An “official U.S. military identification card” together with a “U.S. military record of service” showing the applicant's place of birth was in the United States.
- A “valid government-issued photo identification card” (federal, state, or tribal) showing the applicant's place of birth was in the United States.
This bill is not needed. It shifts cost and burden to individual voters. It is an attack on our constitutional rights and clear voter suppression. It is all part of the centuries-long attack on voting rights by conservatives:

“No quarter” isn’t some wanna be tough guy line - it means something. An order to give no quarter would mean to take no prisoners and kill them instead. That would violate the law of armed conflict. It would be an illegal order. It would also put American service members at greater risk. Pete Hegseth should know better than to throw around terms like this.
