Dear football, Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life. Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter. After 20 seasons , many people have played an important role in my career. When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead. I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way. The judge in this case, Nicholas Roland, has form on letting the perpetrators of serious sexual crimes against children off without prison time, due to 'mitigating circumstances'.
In 2023 Sophie Carter (previously known as Dominic Carter) was convicted of downloading 11 'indecent' images of children including 2 'category A' images, the highest category. The minimum starting point for that is a 1 year prison sentence. Instead Judge Roland opted for a 6 month suspended sentence. Carter then failed to show up for probation appointments, ended up back in court 4 times, most bizarrely for pretending to have been kidnapped, presumably as an excuse for not attending appointments required by the sentence.
Carter was put back before Judge Roland, who eventually conceded he had 'no choice' but to send Carter to prison. However even then Roland still said 'The last thing I want to do is to have to send you to prison for these offences.' It is hard not to conclude that Judge Roland seems to prioritise keeping people who have committed serious sexual offences against children out of prison, rather than public safety.

It cannot be right that teenage boys can commit brutal crimes of rape like this & avoid prison entirely. I have appealed these sentences to the AG. The excuses of ADHD for a crime like this are an offence to justice.

NEW: The Attorney General is reviewing whether to refer this to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme.
A Govt spox said: "“We share the public’s shock at the details of this horrific case, and our thoughts are with the young victims during this distressing time.
“The Law Officers are urgently reviewing the case with the utmost care and attention.”
Several MPs asked for it to be referred.
