Today, the Russians once again killed and wounded civilians, burned down a market and a shopping center, and attacked garages in Bila Tserkva, as well as museums and business centers in Lukianivka. They launched an IRBM designed for nuclear delivery, without a nuclear warhead, to terrorize Ukrainians and intimidate Europe.
But the situation on the front line will continue to deteriorate for Russia. More “Tuapses” will burn. By the end of the year, strikes against Russia will become far more extensive. The Middle Strike campaign will intensify as well, causing severe logistical disruptions to the supply chains of temporarily occupied territories.
At the same time, the Russian economy will keep gasping for air. Not even temporarily high oil prices will be enough to save it. Social tensions will continue to rise, and sooner or later the political system of the Russian Federation will begin to fracture.
There will be more convulsions: attacks against the EU, further mobilization attempts, or other acts of destabilization. But Europe’s response must not weaken — it must intensify.
We refused to close the skies over Ukraine. We failed to provide enough air defense. The faces of new victims after every attack remind us that we hesitated for too long to give Ukraine the means to defend itself.
That must change.
February 20, 2014, the day Russia began its war against Ukraine, must ultimately be remembered as the day Vladimir Putin buried Russia itself.
