Last week Aura attended the annual World Nuclear Fuel conference in Monaco. The focus was very much on how to accelerate the development of new nuclear reactors. There was great recognition of the need to power the rapid growth of AI and only nuclear can provide the emission free, base load competitive power that their datacentres need. At the same time it was agreed that new uranium mines are urgently needed to meet the rising fuel supply gap. The positive momentum for Swedish uranium mining continues, in line with the government’s policy of regenerating the country’s nuclear power industry. On January 1 this year the Mineral Act was amended to remove the national ban on uranium exploration and mining. Yesterday the Swedish government announced that it would next be modernizing the Nuclear Act to declassify uranium mining as a nuclear facility. The government has made clear that its primary intent in the legislation is to remove the existing municipal veto on uranium mining. The current veto potentially affords a small group a veto over a development that is overwhelmingly valuable to the broader community and nation as a whole. As part of the legislative programme, the government also announced an enquiry into the technical aspects of the mining of alum shale to address genuine community concerns particularly about the impact of mining on local water. Swedish Parliament votes to overturn uranium mining ban   On the 5th of November, the Parliament of Sweden 🇸🇪 voted to overturn the uranium mining ban, which has been in place since 2018. The lifting of the ban will come into effect on January 1st, 2026. Following this, #uranium will beregulated as a concession mineral under the Minerals Act, meaning that it will become embedded within the conventional permit process for #mining in #Sweden . Philip Mitchell (@PhillMitchell01 ), Executive Chairman, said: “This vote means that from now on uranium has the potential to be an important contributor to Sweden’s economy and energy security, and to support the region’s intention to triplenuclear power. Given that Sweden has 27 percent of Europe’s known uranium within its bedrock, the commercial potential is significant. For polymetallic projects such as Häggån, with 800M lbs of uranium mineral resource, this will add substantial value and reinforce investor interest in continuing to develop the project. We have not hidden the fact that we would like to extract uranium in a safe and environmentally friendly manner from the Häggån deposit. It is economically sensible, more resource efficient and less environmentally wasteful to use Swedish uranium to support the country’s nuclear ambitions and a global nuclear renaissance rather than treat it as waste as currently required.“ The change in legislation means that it will be possible to apply for permits to explore for and extract uranium from January 1st, 2026. In September 2023, the company published a Scoping study for Häggån which was constrained by the uranium prohibition. The company will now explore options to include uranium in its future plans. In August 2024, Aura Energy’s Swedish subsidiary Vanadis Battery Metals applied for an exploitation permit for Häggån K1 with the Swedish Mining Inspectorate. After January 1stthat application could be updated and then re-submitted to include uranium. The market outlook for uranium remains strong, with the World Nuclear Association highlighting in its reference case an annual growth rate of 5.3 per cent in nuclear reactor uranium requirements. This creates a supply deficit to be covered by as yet unspecified sources of 193M lbs U3O8, or 49 per cent of demand by 2040. #ASX $AEE #Mining #CleanEnergy
