A list of Russian skullduggery in the Syrian File: 1) FSB encouraging anti-Russian Chechens to fly to Syria for jihad since 2011, making them Syria's problem to deal with. Russia gets rid of their dissidents and if they get killed there, permanently deals with them. Scummy way to treat a supposed ally. 2) Russian backroom deal with Israel to bomb Syria as long as they dont hit Russian assets. Israel would go on to hit the SAA, various Syrian airports/apartment blocs etc, Iranian forces, Hezbollah, etc. Most infamous case of Israel bombing SAA was when they bombed SAA units on the Palmyra highway, opening ISIS a pathway to Damascus. 3) Russia's Astana Accord imposition on Syria in 2020. The Accords are especially a brainchild creation of Lavrov, just like his other garbage treaties like Minsk 1, Minsk 2, and the JCPOA's Snapback mechanism. Russia forces Syria to freeze the war, leave Idlib - the final stronghold - alone. That is despite the SAA's successful Dawn of Idlib 1 and 2 operations in 2019 which severely encircled HTS into its final pocket around Idlib. The fruit of this treaty, and others like it, is quite obvious in their results today. 4) Russia's imposition of American disarmament procedures upon Syria. This includes the 2013 dismantling of the chemical weapons program, which served as a major deterrent against Israeli bombings. Israeli direct interference in Syria increased once this deterrent was neutralized. 5) Russia's imposition of Syrian Air Force reforms. This placed Syria's Air Force under Russian command. Most notably, Syria's Air Force was highly inactive during Jolani's December 2024 offensive, which is very uncharacteristic of their activities and doctrine earlier in the civil war. There have been whispers of a "stand down order" being placed on the air force, particularly after Aleppo fell to HTS. 6) Russia's secret deal with HTS after the fall of Aleppo. According to Jolani himself in a 2025 interview, as well as circumstantial evidence at the time surrounding military activities, Putin reached a secret deal with him after Aleppo fell. Russia would facilitate HTS's offensive and not stand in their way. The circumstantial evidence for this was Syria's air force being stood down - under command from Russia, with a glaringly notable lack of activity. There were rumors at the time of Russian "friendly fire" targeting of SAA ground units as well, though I haven't gone deep to investigate and confirm this claim. But it is worth mentioning they exist, and if confirmed, will corroborate further with a Russian-HTS deal. The final point that showcases a deal being made was the fact that Russia's embassy was completely unmolested when Damascus fell. Iran's embassy on the other hand was ransacked by HTS. So it is abundantly clear who sold Syria and made a backroom deal with Jolani. The embassy incident is the smoking gun confirming Jolani's "secret deal" interview statement to Syrian media. What makes it even more scummy is that the situation was still quite salvageable around Aleppo - it only became uncontrollable once Hama fell, and Homs was becoming the frontline. 7) Russia imposing "reconciled rebels" onto Syria, as well as Green Busing terrorists into Idlib. Russia effectively saved the remnants of Jabhat al-Nusra's (later rebranded as HTS) battered forces in Ghouta in 2018, shipping them over to Idlib via Green Buses. This, alongside other similar events, helped turn Idlib into a militant stronghold of rebels from all over, being shipped in through Green Buses. Russia also imposed "reconciled rebels" onto Syria, forcing Syria to reincorporate rebel formations into its ranks, particularly in Southern Syria like Daraa. The bulk of these "reconciled rebels" were organized into the SAA's 5th Corps and 8th Brigade. Amongst their ranks included rebel groups trained by Israel (like Fursan al Jolan) and Nusra & other fighters who decided to join this force instead of taking the Green Bus. The 5th Corps and 8th Brigade were under Russian command and trained by Russians. One of the main leaders of the formation, Ahmad al-Awda, is known as "Russia's man in the South." When the December 2024 events began, Ahmad al-Awda's forces joined HTS, formed the "Southern Operations Room" (SOR) and marched on Damascus. They seized Damascus a full day before HTS's forces arrived from the North. Al-Awda continues to represent Russian, as well as UAE, interests in Jolani's New Syria. It is worth noting that the SOR also incorporated several Druze formations that joined the December 2024 HTS offensive, many of the same Druze militia groups who now control Suweida. I have covered this in several tweets. 8) It is interesting to note how Russia has effectively kidnapped and placed a gag order on Assad. Not a single media statement or interview by Assad or his entire family since December 8, 2024. It is somewhat reminiscent of Operation Storm-333 by Soviet special forces. The Spetsnaz killed independent/Khalqist Afghan Communist GenSec/Head of State, Hafizullah Amin, and installed the much more pro-Moscow Parcham faction in power in Kabul. If Russia has nothing to fear about and has clean hands in Syria, why silence the Assads? Russia has also immediately met with Jolani's officials within days of the fall, with warm handshakes and smiles with people they called terrorists a mere week or two prior. Once again, rounds back to the secret deal following the fall of Aleppo.
