Where are women safe? Everywhere and nowhere. It just depends on how insecure men are.
A story. I’m fired up. Rode my e-bike to the grocery store to pick up a few things to grill up for my mom later today. A beautiful Denver day.
Shopping was successful and I had great success riding the bike roads and side streets to be extra safe.
On my way home from the store a guy on his road bike blasts past me at a red light and I could instantly sense a very aggressive energy. I paid him no mind and road my bike (which can get up to 26 m/ph. After a few blocks a big hill approached and I passed him with courtesy.
He instantly shifted gears and started peddling aggressively to overtake me once the hill smoothed out. And again, I paid him no mind.
The same thing would happen again and I passed him. Safely. Nowhere near him and this time I smiled and made a little joke “this bike can do that all day”. I could sense the situation just became weird so I was trying to use some humor and that’s where it started to go wrong.
The moment I made that joke, instead of joking back, he started his, let’s just call it, verbal diarrhea.
He started to yell at me for at least 4 blocks worth: “you stupid b*tch, you know that thing has a f’ing motor! You stupid c*nt, you f’ing b*tch. Flipping me off and speeding up and slowing down. He became so angry when I said “go f*ck yourself you angry prick” that he started to question my gender “are you even a f’ing b*tch!!” He screamed so many times. And I said “the only b*tch here is you, you psycho”.
He had clearly never met a women that could yell back at him.
I stopped immediately after about 4 blocks because that’s what we have to do to deescalate men who are violent.
A women stepped out of her house because of the loud screaming and said “are you okay?!” And I said “no, standby to call cops.” She then asked me how long I’ve been with the guy, which shocked me and I said “I don’t know that guy, he’s been screaming at me for 4 blocks because I passed him”. And she was shook. So we waited together for about 5 minutes until we couldn’t see him anymore. He kept screaming and launching his arms into the air with middle fingers pointed at the sky for several blocks until he disappeared.
Then I thanked the women for waiting with me as a witness and I drove home. Another guy would turn into the bike lane and waved - I kept my distance. I didn’t dare pass him.
This is a simple Sunday riding my new bike to and from the grocery store. This sh*t happens behind the wheel, in the outdoors, at work, anywhere, everywhere. All the bloody time.
So when men ask me why I say things like “I can instantly feel if someone is a threat or not” it’s because women are always on the lookout for insecure men who are too angry and potentially violent.
There are much worse places in the world to be a woman. We deal with micro aggressions as well as extreme domestic violence in this country. But none of it is okay. None. Of. It.

Best idea I’ve heard of in years. Would go a long way toward cleaning up the dog poop situation here in #Boulder.
