Based loosely on Sinbad the Sailor from The Arabian Nights, Krúdy transformed him from a literal adventurer into a wandering man of memory and longing. Szindbád is obsessed with recollections of past loves, youthful encounters, and meals. One famous 1971 film adaptation of his novellas features a 10-minute scene of him eating a four-course meal of broth, bone marrow on toast, roast pheasant with cabbage, and pancakes filled with jam. The famous lunch scene takes place in 1890s Budapest, at the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Bar'dayez Bistro pub quiz, Nairobi, Thursday August 21. Thanks to the geniuses of team Hocus Pocus for adopting me for the evening. I was the least knowledgeable person on the team. My primary contributions were buying a few rounds of drinks and pouring the Jameson from the bottle of whiskey that we won.

I love the way the audience gasps in awe regularly. Most of them are probably fanatical practitioners themselves. Yo-Yo masters (male and female). They clearly know which moves are extra impressive. As a layperson, I think the whole performance is amazing. Mad skills!
