---THE TAKEOVER💹--- Nobody voted on it. Nobody scheduled it. It just happened — the way all the best Ape Gang moves happened — like it had always been the plan and the city was only now catching up. LoccJaw came down Broad Street at eleven in the morning with the windows down and the system up. The low rider moved slow and deliberate, hydraulics kissing the asphalt in a smooth rolling dip. Blue paint. Chrome catching the sun. From the windows — $GNGSTR bills fanning out into the street in steady waves like the car was breathing them. People stopped. A kid on a bike chased the low rider for half a block scooping bills off the ground and stuffing them into his hoodie. LoccJaw didn't speed up. Didn't slow down. Arm out the window, music loud, the Gang's mark fluttering across Broad Street like the neighborhood had grown new leaves. By the time he turned the corner the block was already talking. ------------------------------------------------------------ Three miles away in the financial district, Vagrant Vince was already inside the bank. Nobody knew how. Security footage would later show him simply — there. Already at the vault. A janitor's cart nobody remembered seeing arrive, a cigarette behind his ear that somehow never fell. He didn't take anything out of the vault. He put something in. Stack after stack of fresh $GNGSTR, filed neatly alongside the old currency like they'd always belonged there. He closed the vault. Wheeled the cart out. Walked past two guards who both later swore they'd never seen him. He lit his cigarette on the front steps. Kept walking. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Ape City Grand Casino had been running the same chips since before most of the staff could remember. That changed on a Tuesday. Mjay walked in at noon like a man who owned the building. Straight to the pit boss, brick of $GNGSTR on the felt. "We're switching the chips." New trays came out of the back — $GNGSTR branded, the Gang's mark pressed into every denomination. The moment the first tray hit the cage window it was over. Word spread through the floor in four minutes. Guests abandoned tables mid-hand, cocktails left sweating on felt, lining up at the cage to convert. A man in a full suit elbowed past a bachelorette party. Someone's grandmother was somehow first in line and nobody could explain it. Mjay stood at the center of it all, cigar going, watching with the calm of a man who had seen rougher waters. A dealer caught his eye from across the pit. Mjay drew slow. Exhaled. "Deal," he said. On the other side of the building Duncan had found the slots. Hand truck stacked with $GNGSTR rolls, banana seltzer sweating in his free hand. One by one he converted them — old currency out, Gang currency in. A woman sat down at a machine he'd just finished and hit a minor jackpot on her first pull. $GNGSTR spilled into the tray. She looked at the bills. Looked at Duncan. "What is this?" "Better," Duncan said, and moved to the next machine. ------------------------------------------------------------ By sundown Reido had three missed calls from the city and wasn't returning any of them. He was on the Safehouse roof watching Ape City settle into its evening — lights coming on block by block, the low hum of a place that had no idea how thoroughly its Monday had been rearranged. Funkypiks appeared beside him the way he always did — suddenly, slightly out of breath, backpack rattling with cans. His eyes had already found the exchange building two blocks over. Six stories of blank concrete, visible from half the city, completely untagged. "Don't," Reido said. "I'm just going to look at it." "You're absolutely not just going to look at it." "From closer." He was at the ledge before Reido finished the sentence, dropped off the edge and hit the fire escape two floors down like it was nothing. Reido watched him go, the rattle of cans fading into the street below. Twenty minutes later the exchange building had a new mural. $GNGSTR. Twenty feet tall. The Gang's mark bigger than anything else on the block. Reido looked at it for a long moment. "He's going to get me a noise complaint," he said, to no one.
