Driving used to signal freedom. Now they're strapped with gps trackers, speed limiter keys, goodboy driving sensors, seatbelt beeps, lane drifting interruptions. Kids are shackled with "find my iphone" features. I fear (or hope) that all this so called innovation gets rejected over time, and parents and kids alike start to opt for old cars, flip phones and good old latchkeys.

Fascinating generational divide.
There’s a bunch of different things you could say in terms of analyzing why exactly this is, and I think we know a lot of them. Stuff related to technology etc…
But it’s just really interesting from a generational perspective. I definitely got my drivers license as soon as possible. I was 16 same for my brother, same for my sister, same for all of us.
It’s almost like, at the deepest level, the younger generation isn’t excited for the world that’s out there.

Yet another friend with a child turning 16 next week. Hasn’t gotten a learner’s permit. Zero interest in a driver’s license. I keep hearing this same story. What’s WRONG with these kids?!?! On my 16th birthday, my mom took me out of school to take my driving test. Same for everyone I knew. Even if you couldn’t afford your own car, you could beg the use of the family station wagon occasionally. Freedom. Independence. Heck, privacy on a date! Are these kids giving all that up for scrolling TikTok and an occasional Uber?

Met up with a friend I hadn't seen in years tonight. He used to be online, 2016 era, he was here in the thick of it. But for the past few years he has been off everything. No IG, no X, no Facebook etc... he was asking me about what's been happening here. Asking about old posters. Asking if they were "retired" or what's still going on. He had no idea about any of the recent problems of slop on X, the brain boiling or the mass conspiratard-ism and how so much has been subsumed into the sewer.
I told him the status of the situation and said he should stay offline. He said he's going to.
