This is one of the main knocks I have against Keefe. This quote pisses me off harddd. Prob gonna go on a bit of a rant here. I still think boo’ing the kid in the 3rd was moronic, but his quote and reasoning are why im not a fan of him as a coach.
No, Sheldon, these are not innocent mistakes. An innocent mistake is catching an edge and falling down and losing your man. Taking it goal by goal:
1) on the first goal, he never should’ve been in that position. he’s on the outside of Allen instead of boxing out his man in front and lifting his stick. Instead, he’s whacking at it while staying 2 feet away from his guy. If you’re boxing out and getting underneath Ehlers, who by the way is not a big strong guy, then you’re never in a position to whack it into your own net.
You don’t get mad at him for smacking it into the net, but you absolutely can get mad at his lackluster play in front of the net and either inability or unwillingness to defend the right way. Idk if Keefe gives him a pass but we’ve seen it all season long. Fucking box out in front of the net. Just because you’re a skill guy does not mean you get a pass on defending.
So, no, not innocent on goal 1.
2) on the second goal, it’s not innocent because you absolutely never carry the puck near the crease with a forechecker on you for the exact reason of what happened. It’s unnecessary, and it’s pure hubris. You want guys playing with confidence but not blind stupidity levels of confidence.
He could’ve done 1,000 other things that play like turn toward the boards, go behind the net, etc. but he chose to break a cardinal rule of defensemen bc of pure hubris. And THAT is why it’s not innocent. As 50 said in Power, “he did that shit. Guilty as fuck.”
It very much seems like Keefe thinks those two goals are unavoidable and just bad bounces everyone should ignore. Those plays happen. They happened to Severson a lot. But last night are NOT two examples of them. Theyre such teachable moments and it feels like Keefe and his staff don’t look at them like that.
Go back and tell Luke 1) defend properly in front and you won’t be in a position to smack it in your own net and 2) never skate in the crease with a forechecker on you. This is day 1, peewee level shit you’re taught in any country in the world that plays hockey.
And as far as “you bench a guy and he may not play well for weeks…” where was that energy for Nemec? Nemec got benched scratched, and he was mature enough to dig himself out of it and become a better player. But because it’s Luke, who you’re indirectly telling everyone is so fragile he can’t take a benching, you forgive and forget.
Fuck out of here with those post game comments from Keefe. Enough with the babying.
