@ZeldaZealot “So your betrothed says you’ve been buying tulip bulbs.” “Yeah, they’re an investment.” “It says here you spend 2000 guilders on bulbs, are you starting a farm?” “That was just one bulb actually.” “….”

@SaladBarFan @TaupeAvenger A Democrat line is that Republicans defund programs they oppose, then cite their underperformance as evidence for opposing it. Democrats inflate the cost of programs they oppose, then cite the inflated cost as evidence for opposing it. At least with Republicans you save money.

Noah Smith, who has flags of Ukraine and Taiwan in his bio, thinks that the situation of countries other than Denmark are none of my business. And he wants the U.S. to seize Greenland from their ally Denmark.

@ArtemisConsort Ironically, people actually deploy this argument in favor or democracy. By making the number of people you have to buy off be most of the population, buying power and governing well are supposed to be aligned. youtu.be/rStL7niR7gs?si…

@atlanticesque I don’t think anyone is seriously proposing we don’t need some amount of cars and highways, so the fact that people can point to his involvement in various road building projects throughout a long and storied career doesn’t mean much to me.

@atlanticesque I’ve always been puzzled by the unique hatred Robert Moses inspires when NYC is unique among American cities for not entirely giving into the car. Either Moses wasn’t nearly as bad as people pretend, or he wasn’t as powerful as this book and its title imply.

@atlanticesque It doesn’t matter how high you push the rent of the people you want to keep out will never pay market rate rent.

People are calling this racist, but I also just think it’s wrong. Sailer is just clinging to tired Boomer copes. Zoning doesn’t stop immigration, it doesn’t even protect single-family suburbs from becoming slums—as he should very well know! Does he consider California a success?

@ArtemisConsort The only solution within the system is for technology to outrun the debt. 5 years ago I thought we were doomed by impossibility of fixing our debt, now I’m not so sure.

@jeremykauffman ICE has literally millions of legitimate targets, just based on that prior you would expect them to have a very good false positive rate. By comparison TSA is looking for a needle in a hay stack and as a matter of policy refuses to be selective.

@jeremykauffman If you plotted law enforcement agencies on a spectrum of what fraction of their time is spent interfering with ordinary, law abiding Americans the TSA would probably be the worst offender. Meanwhile I suspect ICE is among the best.

@politicalmath @emmma_camp_ I love this scene from Better Call Saul because it’s such a visceral depiction of a kind of destructive stupidity that can’t be reasoned with. Even when you are offering it a better deal, it still chooses to hurt you. It only understands force and fear. youtu.be/Qv1i-wYHNQ0?si…

@atlanticesque I support cycling as a hobby and am fine with building some infrastructure for them but I think it’s a little silly as an actual transit mode

For every one (1) cyclist that crosses the East River each day, about 20 cars do, and more than 70 people riding in subways do. Bridges are not ordinary cityscape, they should be optimized for trains, buses, trucks, and cars, not pedestrians or cyclists.
Jess Coleman@jesskcoleman

The entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge should be one of the most majestic places in NYC. Instead, it’s a chaotic mess designed to move cars. This plan is a good first step. But let’s finish the job and reimagine this space for the 10 million pedestrians and cyclists who actually use it every year.

@atlanticesque @jesskcoleman The most important thing to get right with a bridge is efficiently moving cars on and off it. When bridges have traffic jams, it’s because people struggle to get off the bridge at the other end.

@jesskcoleman What? Who the hell cares about how majestic the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is for anyone other than cars? How many people are walking or biking across the bridge besides tourists?

NEW: Mayor Mamdani’s Department of Transportation will finally follow through on a mothballed 2024 plan to build a new and improved Manhattan-side bike lane and pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/03/27/mam…
