@alexmaccaroon Canadian here. Britain is a nice country full of nice people but it’s a world away. And we’re culturally American. And in spite of our shitty government millions of us still consider the US to be our closest ally and friend.

Britain has only three real allies. Australia, New Zealand and Canada. They may elect horrific governments from time to time. But so do we! But they are our natural allies, we are them and they are us.

If anyone thinks the UK currently has the internal political dynamics to stand up to another country making territorial claims in the name of decolonization, then they have their heads stuck so far in the sand that they've hit the Earth's core. Starmer was about to give up Chagos, which is much more strategically positioned than the Falklands are given rising tensions with China. If the Argentinians made a forceful political push for this, it's much more likely they'd succeed. I would venture a guess the same applies for a forceful seizure of the Falklands which would send Milei's approval through the roof if successful.

@earlyvotedata It would cost the Brits a lot to defend the Falklands. Likely more than the economic value of the islands. Especially since they don't have a functional navy and that would take lots to fix.

The Falkland Islands discourse is hilarious because it’s just another example of how Trump breaks people’s brains. Europeans now believe the UK has a navy like they did in the 1800s. US liberals are now presenting arguments about how there wasn’t enough of a native population for it to be called Argentinian, therefore Britain can have the land. Absolute cinema with that one. My favorite has to be Piers Morgan’s suggestion of taking back “the colonies” during the USA’s 250th anniversary.
