The best thing I did all day was listen for 45 minutes to a student who really needed listening to.

@josephgilleland @NC_Governor If you’re referring to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, FDR was dead when the US became the first nation in the world to drop atomic bombs. Truman made the decision.

@NC_Governor Read what FDR said about Japan 🇯🇵 near the end of WWII. Then he dropped the bomb! ChuckU wishes you would remove your head.

The President chose to put our nation at war with Iran without clear objectives or an exit strategy. It’s costing taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and North Carolinians far too much at the pump. His recent threats to Iran are beyond the pale, repugnant, and un-American, and they risk dramatic escalation. I continue to pray for our troops and their families who sacrifice so much to keep us safe.

One of the many depressing things about our current age is the rampant betting on everything from Little League Baseball to how many people will die in the next bombing raid.

Op-ed by Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist. “That’s too much money for anyone to have, so I’m giving most of it away to people and causes that need it. It makes no sense to me that others with this kind of money would criticize anyone doing this.” nytimes.com/2026/03/30/opi…

The first time I ever heard public radio was as a college student @UNCG. The station was @wunc just down the road at UNC-Chapel Hill. 50 years later I’m still listening, and contributing. Happy birthday, WUNC.

Hard to believe I’m turning 99 tomorrow! I’m so grateful that staying connected with my fans has been so fulfilling in my later years. While I’m taking a pause on long distance travel, I’m still available on Cameo! cameo.com/billdaniels

I saw “Tommy” in 1975 at the Ambassador Theater, built 1938, in downtown Raleigh. The Ambassador was rundown by then but still great, and the perfect venue to see this bizarre movie on a huge screen. The theater was torn down in 1979 and I still haven’t forgiven the city.

“It all feels like an echo of one of the most notorious moments in the history of coinage, the minting of a coin in 44 B.C. bearing the profile of Julius Caesar with the abbreviated Latin words for ‘Caesar, Perpetual Dictator’ on its face.” wapo.st/47go3TW

Very sad news. My "home" for 25 years at @CBSNews, CBS News Radio, is shutting down. Feeling bad for all my colleagues who are losing their positions at CBS today.

@davidfolkenflik I once met Harvey Nagler, CBS Radio News Program Director, who emphasized consistency and quality in the news reports. I teach about Edward R. Murrow. The current owners care nothing about public service even as they profit from the public airwaves.

CBS News lays off 6% - less than had been speculated. CBS News Radio is killed off, to go off air May 22 - the home of Edward R. Murrow and in many ways the origin story of US broadcast news. Memo below from CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss and president Tom Cibrowski

This should never have happened. Bad legislation in the 1980s and 1990s allowing near-monopolies to consolidate power and media control has expanded and weakened both journalism and democracy. “Largest local TV operator in the U.S.” is not a compliment, it’s a threat.

Trump says a former president told him "I wish I did what you did" with Iran. Who might that be? Trump says it wasn't Bush and people close to Biden, Obama and Clinton all deny they've been talking war with Trump. @ChrisCameronNYT nytimes.com/2026/03/16/us/…

It’s clear that the FCC’s Brendan Carr is not interested in enforcing the First Amendment. Trump’s threats of punishment for news organizations is no different from press threats in Russia, North Korea, or Iran. nytimes.com/2026/03/14/wor…

"The Collapse of Big Media" Wilson Quarterly, Spring, 2005. Newspaper advertising was $50 billion in 2005. In 2026, it was $8 billion. That's an 84% decline. "Big Media" had no idea how great things were going back in their first era of "collapse."

Reality: No long range plan; no provision for getting Americans evacuated; no evidence of imminent threat; huge cuts to the VA for current veterans and military personnel who will deploy and need medical care when injured. Plus, existing distrust of the US multiplied by 1,000.

Between 2008 and 2020, U.S. newspaper newsroom employment fell 57%. More than 200 counties are now "news deserts"—no local outlet at all. In another 1,500+ counties, only one remains. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20…
