We mourn the loss of Kiara St. James, a trailblazer whose vision and advocacy transformed the lives of countless trans and nonbinary people. As the founder of the New York Transgender Advocacy Group (NYTAG), Kiara was instrumental in the passage of New York State's Gender Expression Nondiscrimination Act (GENDA). She championed PrEP access and HIV treatment for Black and Brown trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming communities —always looking toward a future where her community could not just survive, but thrive. Kiara's leadership through the Transgender Leadership Initiative and her partnership with AIDS United left an indelible mark on our movement.
