The editor of BMJ Open rejected our paper on Athena Swan against the advice of all four peer reviewers. I discovered by subject access request that his view was “coloured” by my “opinionated” twitter feed. 🧵timeshighereducation.com/news/gender-cr…

Fantastic to see the results from a trial on 100 @StGeorgesUni students in @timeshighered today that found a new VR headset experience boosts mental health in students by reducing stress & anxiety on the lead-up to exams. Amazing work from Dr @aileen191 and @zillahwatson 👏

VR-boosted treatments ‘reduce student exam stress’ Preliminary results showed students who used VR headsets reported greater improvements in how calm they felt compared with those who accessed interventions via smartphones, writes Patrick Jack @paddywjack bit.ly/3Ua5zhy

Children with gender distress may face bullying, isolation & family conflict, reasons to be alert to suicide risk. Empathic support is vital but evidence that puberty blockers reduce risk is weak & unreliable. Invoking suicide in this debate is mistaken & potentially harmful.

In my experience admission there is usually about risk. I see people in the community who are as/more unwell. And with no beds it’s even more true now! I’m sure the same was true from your time in AO

Apart from refusal, capacity and consent is an issue. Appointments are virtually pointless for many. Most people I see are long term acutely unwell so potential harm matters. About 90% use substances. All barriers to *anything* requiring order
