No toda restricción entrena.

@CoachJulesAA @MeiaArmador__ That’s the key. When you design a play to improve the mid-block, the players will do something as soon as they will win the ball back. What they do will depend on many factors that interact during the game. Appreciate your comment!

@aitorvazque7 @MeiaArmador__ Had this conversation in my session yesterday with U19 group. Session focus was denying GSC in mid block. Many times this was being done well but the next 1-2 actions after winning weren’t great so we ended up defending again.. Definitely cannot seperate these 👍🏼

In football, defence and attack cannot be separated because the dynamics of the game fluctuate between stability and instability. Great and concise analysis 🤝 @MeiaArmador__
THE GAME CHANGER@TH_GAME_CHANGER

The reason a lot of younger “modern” coaches look vulnerable defensively is primarily because they look to play with large distances and high mobility in possession, which leads to lower compactness (large distances) and a lack of a rigid rest defence (high mobility), taking both risks together. This is a logical evolution in their eyes due to the rise in man orientation, since mobility is one of the biggest solutions. If you want to increase mobility, you have to reduce the distances to make up for a lack of a rigid rest defence, with a much stronger counter press. Unsurprisingly, Guardiola has used an element of this, with him trying to overload the center while keeping shorter distances. Slot’s diamond/4-2-2-2 is also him understanding this logic. If you want to keep longer distances, you go the other way, like De Zerbi, Conte, Maresca, and Farioli to an extent, where you have lesser mobility and manipulate the opposition through automatisms, third-man runs, up-back-throughs, etc. If you want to manipulate the opposition using zonal logic, use large distances with less mobility. If you want to manipulate the opposition using socio-affective and dynamic superiorities, use small distances with a lot of mobility. You cannot design your in-possession intentions without considering the second- and third-order effects out of possession. ✍️ Written by @MeiaArmador__

Encouraging players to find an "unconventional progression" involves redefining the affordances—thus vision. In man-to-man pressing strategies, space and time are no longer essential; they must be created through local interactions.
Dario Pergolizzi@dariopergolizzi

Opportunities to progress are thus no longer only offered by the team who's setting the spaces with defending, but also (maybe even mainly) afforded by the attacking teams' attunement between each other and unpredictable combinations.

@soccerdevlab Players (at local level) and teams (at global level) must constantly adapt to the challenges posed by the game. The UCL is a case in point—especially when everything is at stake in the knockout stages because of the teams levels and game dynamics.

@aitorvazque7 The game constantly shifts between stability and instability. Players who adapt quickest to those changes tend to perform best.

Rotations can act as m2m press’ kryptonite. “How” your players rotate matters just as much. In the build-up to Bayern’s 3rd, players suddenly slow down/accelerate, change direction, even walk backwards/sideways to manipulate their markers & open space.

Has anyone here done an analysis, possibly with match clips, of Bayern’s solutions against Atalanta’s man marking? It was probably one of the most interesting matches of the season, but unfortunately I currently do not have the time to analyze it for spielverlagerung…

@futbolxvenas @stirling_j Really good moves. Look how many players play one-touch football: I think only Kimmich after letting the ball run.

Man-to-man defence usually works well against orthodox or rigid positional styles. Bayern in possession are very fluid and unpredictable, with superb local interaction around the ball, dominating the central space with highly technical players. Really fun to watch!
Jamie Hamilton@stirling_j

Apparently, Bayern are quite good at attacking a full man-to-man defence. Lots of unpredictable movements, lots of dynamic pass and move combinations, lots of goals.

Jose cruz.@josecruzbravo

“Occupying the wide channels doesn’t automatically mean the team’s intention is to build or progress on the outside”. Last weekend, Pep introduced Bernardo and Rodri at the base on the opposite foot. That nuance revealed the real intention behind the move: (Thread 🧵)
