Budget 2026! Two changes I wanted to share my thoughts on. 1/ Crypto reporting penalties for delayed and inaccurate disclosure These penalties apply to platforms, not individual users. For users transacting through compliant Indian exchanges like @CoinSwitch, this shift reduces ambiguity around reporting obligations and lowers the risk of data mismatches or unexpected tax notices. For the industry, this signals a clear compliance-first direction. Offshore exchanges coming to India will need to invest further in systems, controls, and reporting accuracy. This raises operational standards but also increases costs for non-compliant players. Overall, the measure reinforces formalisation of the crypto market while providing clearer guardrails for participants. 2/ STT on equity derivatives The Budget increased Securities Transaction Tax on equity derivatives. Futures: 0.02% → 0.05% Options: 0.1% → 0.15% The intent is to curb speculation in derivatives markets. However, the proposed STT applies uniformly, without differentiating between speculative activity and genuine risk management through hedging. Investors and institutions using derivatives to protect portfolios during volatile periods now pay more for this protection. If the intent is to meaningfully reduce speculation, greater clarity on participant categories may be more effective than across-the-board cost increases. Worth considering whether transaction costs alone can address speculation without impacting prudent risk management.
