The Indian Air Force lost one of its distinguished leaders today. Air Marshal Ajit Vishwanath "Doc" Vaidya VM (11848) F(P) was commissioned into the fighter stream in December 1968 (32 NDA/ 101 PC). Over nearly four decades of service, he accumulated more than 3,000 hours of accident free fighter flying across an extraordinary range of aircraft: Gnat, MiG-21, Mirage 2000, MiG-29 and the Su-30. He was an A2 Qualified Flying Instructor and an Air Force Examiner, shaping generations of combat aviators. As a Wing Commander, he commanded a Mirage 2000 squadron. During his tenure, the unit participated in Operation Cactus in 1988. He led the first mission that projected Indian air power over the Maldives, a decisive demonstration of reach and resolve. For his leadership and courage, he was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 1990. As a Group Captain, he commanded Air Force Station Naliya and later the Air Force Station Pune, overseeing the induction of the initial batches of Su-30 aircraft into service. His staff career was equally impactful. In 1985, at Central Air Command, he played a key role in ensuring the smooth induction of Mirage 2000 aircraft at Air Force Station Gwalior. During two tenures at Air Headquarters as Director Air Staff Requirements, he worked systematically to translate annual acquisition plans into operational capability. After completing the National Defence College course, he was promoted to Air Vice Marshal in 2000 and took over as Air Defence Commander, Western Air Command. He revised the air defence philosophy of the Command and ensured seamless integration of all air defence elements. Promoted to Air Marshal on 18 October 2004, he assumed charge as Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters Eastern Air Command, where he focused on upgrading the operational efficiency of frontline units. In September 2005, he moved to Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations), where he handled critical coordination during the major earthquake in north western India. In April 2006, he was posted to the Perspective Planning and Force Development branch at Headquarters IDS. There, he contributed significantly to jointness, interoperability and the preparation of the 11th Integrated Defence Plan and the Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan. He retired in 2008 Across 39 years, Air Marshal Vaidya exemplified professionalism of the highest order. Whether in the cockpit, at a station command, or at the apex of joint planning, he strengthened the Indian Air Force and contributed meaningfully to the integration of the three Services.
