Elon Musk's decision to *personally* amplify disinformation about the rioting in England by amplifying a bad faith agitator making the obvs false claim the PM called "everyone upset at the murders" thugs should be a key exhibit in Ofcom & parliamentary hearings on misinformation

The big political victory that Reeves had yesterday is that it reiterated what we already knew - that the £20bn in cuts to national insurance were reckless and counterproductive. The big policy risk is that she is going to keep them: ft.com/content/a2d9c2…

1 Last govt left public finances in bad state; 2 it does appear that funding for eg asylum was not provided but 3 c. half of spending "hole" is public pay over which govt made a choice and where pressures were known; and 4 overall challenge for spending was known and remains

A reminder that current OBR forecasts for tax revenues assume the new Govt implements £23bn of tax rises announced by ex-Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, but not yet implemented. Any additional need for tax revenues revealed in today's statement would comes on top of these.

This is dancing on a pinhead. I mean, you can debate the value of the projects that are reportedly going to get axed today, but this nano-nuancing reminds me of Tories who claimed the end of the £20 Universal Credit uplift wasn't a "cut" because it was meant to be time-limited

Public service notice (given lots of confused coverage this morning): you’re not “cutting public spending” if you’re not changing any budgets but instead revealing that the previous government announced transport schemes without the budgets to make them happen

NAO confirms that HS2 without phase 2 will result in trains with less space between Manchester and Birmingham than current west Coast services, and might require demand management to dissuade passengers… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I feel sure that everyone who bangs on about the positive effects of UBIs will give this research the attention it deserves and update their priors accordingly.

Massive OpenResearch basic income papers are out (@smilleralert @dbroockman @evavivalt @AlexBartik @elizabethrds). Very much worth reading - my view is that it is an incredible RCT and an incredible disappointment. RCT was USD11400/yr for 3 years, 1k treatment, 2k control. 1/x

Cut more regulation, save more money The regulatory burden on universities has continued to grow. In the absence of new government funding a reduction in the financial impact of regulation is one of the few positive opportunities available. wonderfulhighered.com/2024/07/22/cut…

Very, very saddened to hear of the death of Toumani Diabate. Toumani was the most extraordinary musician and the leading ambassador for the Kora, the West African harp. His albums with Ali Farka Toure are works of great beauty. open.spotify.com/track/0504BmZ0…

Weird looking back that Euro 96 is one of the epic canonical occasions in England history and it was a losing semi at home. That's how bad England were pre-Southgate, how bad ie the Shearer, Lineker, Ferdinand playing eras were. And now a final is "where did it all go wrong"

Nah be fair. It’s perfectly normal to forge a sense of worth and achievement out of watching someone else’s team lose. For example, I recently had exactly the same ungracious reaction when the SNP lost 80% of their Westminster seats in one night.
