Thanks to @KENS5 for this powerful, important story about how many Mexican-Americans in Texas were robbed of part of their culture. From 1918-1969 it was illegal to speak Spanish in Texas schools. The language was literally beaten out of children by their teachers. 1/2

@Frantastic_Me @JoaquinCastrotx @KENS5 I think Spanish is beautiful too. My daughters all are fluent in Spanish and English. Will not allow them to forget Spanish.

@crb0307 @JoaquinCastrotx @KENS5 The swats for speaking Spanish were given to us by a big and strong male principal. One swat per Spanish word, sometimes they were on the mouth (slaps). I would hide the swat marks from my parents. Still very angry at Donna ISD for allowing the abuse.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in Laredo, 1932. Kahlo was a surrealist who twice married the artist Diego Rivera. Hers was a short & very eventful life. Thanks to Jessica Lee Ray, who sent in this photo. Before I received this, I never realized that Frida had ever come to Texas.
