There is this old photo of a house on Bigelow Boulevard in Pittsburgh in 1935 that reminds me of the story the late Orrin Hatch told me of his family losing their home during the Depression and his father borrowing $100 to buy an acre in the hills above the Pittsburgh and building a house made out of salvaged lumber from a burnt-out building. Three sides of the house were blackened lumber the fourth side was a Meadow Gold Dairy sign. The resiliency of that generation is the stuff we were supposed to be made of.
