These airports cost more. Not because of where they are. Because of who controls them. When one airline runs 80-90% of seats out of an airport, that airline sets the price. There is no competing offer to undercut it. The average fare goes up and stays up. Washington Dulles has almost no low-cost carrier presence. Salt Lake City is Delta's territory with no real alternative. Charlotte is American's hub. One carrier, one price floor. The airports missing from this list are the ones that got lucky. Denver has Frontier based there. Las Vegas has five budget carriers competing for the same passengers. Fort Lauderdale has Southwest and Spirit fighting for every seat.
