According to a report from the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, Igbos gathered to celebrate the NRI JI cultural festival, which is not an offense. However, the gathering reportedly triggered some South Africans, who disrupted the event while spreading a false narrative that the Igbos were trying to install a king. No coronation took place, it was simply a cultural celebration. Unfortunately, some individuals used the situation as an opportunity to loot and destroy Nigerian owned property. The South African police have yet to make any arrests or officially address the situation, even though this is not the first time such incidents have occurred in the country. Other African nationals have also been v!olenly targeted by some South Africans, creating an increasingly hostile environment, especially for Nigerians. We hope the government takes urgent action to address this situation.
