Are you going to describe Mourinho's 4-2-3-1 systems at Inter, Madrid and Chelsea as 4-4-2 because he asked his wingers to track back in certain games? 🤷🏽‍♂️

If you still think it was a 4-2-3-1, teams play their wingers that deep and narrow in a 4-2-3-1 and you think average positions is the way to describe a formation,we just have to disagree on that matter.Though your point on the approach I agree upon.

Having worked with professional coaches and footballers for close to two decades, I'm fairly familiar with the concepts. Watch the match again - David Silva operates in front of Fernandinho/Bernardo and behind Aguero. It was not a 4-4-2.

When a team plays for example a 4-4-2 that is how they operate without the ball when the opposition is in control of the ball.
