I leave X because Musk embraces and supports fascists. Fascists have never solved problems, they created them. They will certainly not lead us to a better future. Find me at better places. App deleted, account will remain silent. Good bye!

Our new paper is out in @NatureComms. We show that observed variations in extreme precipitation-temperature sensitivities across continents can be explained by differences in cloud radiative effects. Read more here: doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

@russ_conser I think it is more of a direction than a principle. For technological evolution my favorite example is how we make light: from fire (candle) to heat (light bulb) to LED. It is a dramatic improvement of efficiency from how much you get (light) to how much you spent…

@akleidon Hard to believe evolution is stuck, but certainly impaired by us. Although new to physics of ecology, evolution of technology is my long bread & butter. IMO same evolutionary dynamics apply (remarkably so). "Does this tech raise our limits" could be good organizing principle?

Key insight in new @akleidon paper: "...life appears to evolve to minimise frictional losses and pushes the imposed transport constraints to higher levels...". IOW life lives at today's limits, but in so doing lives in a way to raise those limits by changing the environment.

New paper: The Second Law of #Thermodynamics, #Life and #Earth‘s Planetary Machinery Revisited. #Entropy and the second law of thermodynamics must apply to life and the Earth system as well, but how, and what can we learn from it? Check out our blog earthsystem.org/2024/11/09/lif…

@russ_conser I think it got stuck with ice ages, not much more to improve, perhaps. Except we humans invented photovoltaics, so we don‘t need the CO2 to transport the useful energy, but can do it with electricity. So I think a next look is at how technology evolved…

@akleidon I'm gonna have to reread up on seed evolution with this enhanced lens. Seems predictive of not only biomes, or even ecological succession of biomes, but with perhaps still deeper analysis, evolution itself? i.e. what next gymnosperm-like problems might nature solve?

@russ_conser Yes, great example! Also the step from gymnosperms to angiosperms were a big change with respect to distribution networks.

@akleidon And would it be correct to understand the evolution of C4 photosynthesis that enabled CO2 capture at low concentration while using less water as another example of something that raised the limits of work by and for life on Earth? royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.109…

@akleidon Thanks for another outstanding contribution. Reading your papers is like reading scientific scripture. Need to develop a chapter and verse reference scheme as the highlighting tool just isn't enough when each sentence could be a sermon!😉
