The upshot of this latest brouhaha is NZF have used tax payer money via Parliamentary Services to buy political capital by paying Hipkins ex wife to muck rake her former husband. The usual NZF grift and total disrespect for tax payer money.

Just spoke to Chris Hipkins at Wellington Airport. He is going to hold a press conference this afternoon. He said the allegations are very personal and he will address them. More soon

There seems to be a rumour doing the rounds that I’m somehow “pulling strings” behind the scenes in relation to Jade’s Facebook post. I'm not. Jade is a friend of mine and has been for several years, before she and Chris separated. I have known about many of the personal difficulties she went through for a long time, but because she is a friend, I have always felt those experiences were hers to speak about (or not speak about) as she chose. I did not know she intended to make that post until it appeared online, and I had no involvement in media obtaining screenshots of it. In fact, I have previously cautioned her about how brutal the media environment can be when private matters become public, and about the toll that can take on women in particular. It is not something I wanted to see a friend go through. The idea that I somehow orchestrated this is simply wrong and conspiratorial. As any friend would, I obviously have my opinions, but given the extraordinary leaps that are being made now I wish I hadn't commented at all. Yes, I write about politics and comment on it publicly. I have done so for years. But there seems to be a strange assumption that anyone who has political opinions must therefore be acting as some kind of shadowy operative, pulling levers behind the scenes. I have absolutely no interest in that kind of role. I’m a writer and commentator. An observer. I analyse politics, I criticise politicians when I think it’s warranted, and I defend people when I think they are being unfairly attacked. Jade is well connected and would have people more qualified than me to give her political advice. But in any case, my understanding of the situation is that Jade is simply fed up and posted. I'll leave it at that other than to request that people take a deep breath and try to have some empathy and understanding for Jade.

Sad to see Labour resorting to a very bad-faith clip on social media, intentionally cutting out vital context in a clumsy attempt to mislead. I was asked whether people should respond to fuel shortages by driving slower or the like and I explicitly said: “I’m very reluctant to adopt the role of the schoolma’am telling people what to do with their own lives”. “People will make their own choices. People’s circumstances vary considerably. Their budgets vary considerably. Their needs vary considerably. Their work obligations, their family obligations vary considerably. People are mindful, and New Zealanders are sensible.” Not that you’d know that from Labour’s feed. They left those key statements out. Come on Labour, put the petty politics to one side. This is a time to give people clear balanced information, not a time for posts designed to mislead.

Time for another correction, Stuff? I watched the press conference & she said she was not going to tell NZers how to live their lives or all the stuff that we all already know like if you have heavy stuff in the boot it uses more petrol. This is wilful misrepresentation

Interesting headline because if you read the story it becomes clear that accurate alternatives could have included “Labour make false claim about Nicola Willis” or “Labohr misinformation about finance minister questioned.”

The best way to rebuild trust in the media is not through petulant demand but by the media acting in a more trustworthy manner.

@matt_horncastle Funny thing is the stuff article. They are reporting that Chris refuses them and they won’t publish it until verified. Yet they ran a hit piece on Luxon last week that was false with no checks

Can anyone verify the rumours about the facebook post from Chris Hipkins ex wife is true? It is pretty bad if it is.

@aniobrien Don’t forget when he was health minister he denied MOH gave passes to two women to cross the boarder when Auckland was in lockdown. Then when it was proved they did he said they lied in their application and called them hookers.
