Nobody in their sane mind would tell you INC got us freedom. No single person or political party got us freedom. The freedom we got was a result of multitude of factors ranging from - India becoming increasingly difficult for Brits to rule and manage with constant protests, non cooperation, chaos and then Post WW2 drain and British economic condition and their requirement to focus domestically. Ultimately it wasn't worth it for them. Born out of this struggle was INC and it's not a coincidence that leaders at the helm of the party were the same guys who were organizing rallies and going to jail for doing so. If you were thinking INC got us freedom and you realized it later then clearly you are gullible and weren't paying attention in school and probably never bothered to read anything out of established curriculum. Think objectively and understand what was this land when Brits left and what was the economic, educational, agricultural, industrial situation back then and what did Nehru or Inc had to work with. Nehru inherited a land broken by economic and resource drain, mainly agrarian unleashed by centuries of colonial rule. He inherited people steeped deep in poverty, blind beliefs, casteism and no education. He laid down framework to improve agriculture, milk production, built education institutions, research institutions, public sector. He ensured democracy stayed strong by ensuring free and fair elections, made sure it was not governments business to worry about people's religious practices. Had he resorted to full capitalism instead of a socialistic economy, we would have been a failed state. Power would be in the hands of few powerful families and that would have been the end of worlds largest democracy, which we have all come to love and admire.
