10 years ago, I See Maths began! I wanted to be part of a movement to give children rich, diverse mathematical experiences. To begin, it was writing security codes for MI5, designing theme parks and planning stock ordering systems for a fruit stall.

This Jacobean travelling library was commissioned for a gentleman to carry his own collection of miniature vellum-bound books inside a wooden case ~ contents are listed on the inside cover (1617). Possibly, the first of its kind (University of Leeds) dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2…

Ray Harryhausen animated 7 skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts (1963), moving 35 appendages per frame to match the actors. Some days he managed just 13 or 14 frames. It took 4 & a half months to create this 3 mins scene.

The opening of an Anglo-Saxon calendar for November, with the first day of winter marked in Old English on November 7th: 'wintres angin', winter's beginning. From the Red Book of Darley, made c.1060 purl.stanford.edu/fr610kh2998

'And then the wide-umbraged elm begins to fail; Her mourning multitudes of leaves go pale Seeing afar the icy shears Of Winter, and his blue-tipped spears Marching unconquerable upon the sun of bright All-Hallows.' x.com/ClerkofOxford/…
Eleanor Parker@ClerkofOxford

This is from Tolkien's early poem 'Kortirion among the Trees', written in autumn 1915. There's a nod to the Old English Menologium in Winter's icy spears marching 'upon the sun of bright All-Hallows' - but the image of falling leaves as birds' wings taking flight is all Tolkien.

In many early medieval calendars, 7 November is the first day of winter. One Anglo-Saxon poem calls today 'Winter's Day': like an invading warrior, it 'seizes sun-bright autumn with its army of ice and snow' and holds the earth captive until spring returns aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2014/11/after-…
