Delighted to see this recognised after several years of ‘on/off’ commissioning. You can reduce demand and hence referrals to most specialities by up to 50% by maximising and organising GP expertise and resources. This is tip of the iceberg and needs to be build on and extended

The critical role of primary care elective services has been highlighted by the Health Minister. Minister Nesbitt visited Glengormley Practice to hear how it was reducing waiting lists for gynaecology outpatients, vasectomy and minor surgeries. 👉 More: health-ni.gov.uk/news/minister-…

The message and intent is correct here. It is effectively a properly resourced and staffed General Practice. It’s pretty much what we should do and want to do if only we could….

@brianoneill There are some GPs in the minor illness/injury units, but you’d need an entire workforce to deal with the numbers. Far better to support and staff core practice….

@AlanStout19 Alan, was there not meant to be something like GPs in casualty units to help them handle all the minor stuff, or did nothing ever come of that? A lot of people go to casualty as they can't see their GP, but I can see you could end up with a vicious circle of workload going to a&e

Well worth reading. We have been having these conversations as long as I have been involved in medicine but so little has changed. Patients, families and those involved in the actual care have all the answers

@BBCMarkSimpson We had the privilege of hosting a school assembly in which Richard spoke to pupils & staff for an hour. I’ve never had a visitor capture the attention of children & adults quite like it. Richard is a very special human being.

This is very important. As well as the shocking graph ‘pay parity’ is also being misinterpreted. Parity is being used to talk about uplifts, but our starting point of baseline pay is well being the rest of UK and Ireland
Paul Gosling@PaulGosling1

Very simplistic (and simply wrong) to argue against NI public sector pay parity with England - in border areas there is a real problem of lack of pay parity with RoI. Doctors here say that explains this very concerning graph.

@AlanStout19 It’s not great when quarter of the NI population is waiting for hospitals No wonder you GPs are so busy.

@CaralNiChuilin @healthdpt Thanks for highlighting this @CaralNiChuilin , 10 year old project and we still have snails pace progress. It’s also a process dominated by meetings and obstacles, and I suspect a lot of allocated money being handed back. It could be so much easier and more impactful

I had an adjourment debate on Tuesday regarding MDT’s in North Belfast. One surgery, Clifton St has over 10,000 patients in one of the most deprived wards. Our constituents/patients are being disadvantaged further by a lack of pace from .@healthdpt
Alan Stout@AlanStout19

A large amount of this was for MDTs in GP practices. It’s like wading through treacle. Put it directly into practices, allow them to expand, and you transform instantly with immediate patient impact
