Human trafficking happens in Canada, to Canadians, and it’s happening here in Alberta. Thank you to the brave survivor who came forward. Thank you to @ALERT_AB for their commitment to pursuing justice. If you are a survivor of human trafficking, or suspect you know someone who is, do not hesitate to reach out. Survivors of human trafficking can call 211 for regional help in Alberta. In Alberta, victims are provided with support resources through ALERT’s Safety Network Coordinators. A Calgary man was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to human trafficking offences. Thank you to @ALERT_AB’s Human Trafficking Unit and law enforcement partners for their work leading to this conviction. Holding traffickers accountable is an important step in protecting our communities and supporting survivors of exploitation. Human trafficking is happening here in Alberta, but through awareness, collaboration and coordinated action we can stop it. Together we can end exploitation.

The Supreme Court’s decision to remove mandatory minimum sentences for child sexual abuse material weakens accountability. CSAM and child sex trafficking are part of the same cycle of exploitation. Write to your MP or the Prime Minister — tell them to strengthen laws that protect children.

The Alberta Centre commends the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), Chief Bill Fordy, O.O.M., and the St. Catharines Standard for releasing the names of the man arrested for attempting to purchase sex from a minor. As Canada’s Chief Advisor to Combat Human Trafficking, Jennifer Richardson reminds us, transparency is essential to protecting vulnerable children and preventing exploitation. Publicly naming offenders helps deter future crimes, supports survivors, and fosters safer, more accountable communities. We encourage continued collaboration between law enforcement, media, and advocates to help end the demand for sexual exploitation.

The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to examine the constitutionality of a mandatory minimum sentence for purchasing sexual services from someone under age 18.  The rights and safety of children must be prioritized for the sake of justice and community well-being.

#HumanTrafficking victims often feel cared for/protected by their traffickers, like they’re part of a family or something important. Officers in #NovaScotia are trained to provide food, safe houses & more to build relationships with victims, replacing the “need” for a trafficker.
