The more I coach the more true this becomes: If I’m talking more than the players on the field, I am no longer coaching.

The more I coach, the more true this becomes: If I’m constantly instructing, players aren’t making decisions. Are we trying to develop players who solve problems, or players who follow orders? “athletes may perceive themselves as less competent at making decisions when the coach is constantly providing concurrent instructions”(Williams & Jackson, 2019).

There’s no such thing as a 9-year-old future centre back. Research shows rotation boosts skills, creativity, game IQ & reduces burnout. Experts say start focusing positions around 13-14y, once players understand the game more. Let them explore, it shapes complete footballers ⚽️🌱

@MyFootballCoach @nasthe3rd @ShakeyWaits You can get the necessary repetition (without repetition) in constrained games. Restricting the dominant foot in a possession game (more invasive) or encouraging the use of the weak foot with additional goals (less invasive). Then, adjust to the optimal challenge point.

@nasthe3rd @ShakeyWaits If a player can’t strike the ball effectively with their weak foot, that’s a problem. You’re not getting the repetition needed for that in ‘games’. Isolated work — ball, wall, repetition — is best here. Ironically, it still lets players explore and self-correct.

I’ve heard this concern/criticism quite a bit, and it’s worth addressing. An ecological approach is not a method. It’s a lens of how skill is viewed. “Being skillful is not a process of repeating a solution, it’s repeating the process of finding a solution.” -@ShakeyWaits 🧵
MyFootballCoach@MyFootballCoach

The problem with the ecological approach to coaching? It assumes players will figure it out technically. Many don’t. ⚽ @CoachingFamily
