Aerobic decline over a year if a runner with a 50VO2max stops running and only walks 10k steps (55% HRmax) per day for a year.
Why?
- Cardiac output and stroke volume reduce because heart isn’t challenged.
- Mitochondria downregulate in both number and function.
- Capillary density in muscle drops.
- Blood volume contracts.
The stimulus is too weak to preserve the aerobic adaptations through running (or any higher level aerobic exercise).
Test this out for yourself? The good news is a couple jogs per week would offset a lot of this loss as would 'speed-walking' (working at a higher % of HRmax). It would only take 4-6 months of consistent training to attain previous levels of aerobic fitness.
Test this out for yourself?
Walking is great (for all sorts of reasons) - it is necessary but (for health) not sufficient.
