Keito Nakamura – Japan’s handsome winger 🇯🇵✨
Last night, he started for Japan in their World Cup clash against the Netherlands, and what a performance it was.
Nakamura scored a brilliant goal to make it 1-1, helping Japan fight back before the match eventually ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
The Japanese winger has been playing in Europe for several years now. He is currently 25 years old and will turn 26 at the end of July, which is pretty much the perfect age for a player entering his prime.
At the moment, he plays for Reims in France's Ligue 2.
To be honest, many people were surprised that he decided to stay there. He had already proven himself in Ligue 1, putting up impressive numbers before Reims were relegated. Several clubs showed interest in him, but he chose loyalty and stayed to help the club fight their way back.
Last season in Ligue 2, Nakamura made 29 league appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 2 assists.
The season before, in Ligue 1, he recorded 11 goals and 2 assists in 32 appearances. At one point, he was absolutely on fire, scoring in five consecutive league matches.
And here's another fun fact: he scored against PSG in both meetings that season.
Before moving to France, Nakamura played for Austrian side LASK.
In the 2022/23 season, he was one of their key players, registering 14 goals and 7 assists in 31 league appearances. During his first season with the club, he managed 6 goals and 1 assist in 22 matches.
His journey to where he is today is genuinely fascinating.
Nakamura moved to Europe at just 19 years old, joining FC Twente in the Netherlands on loan. He immediately got opportunities with the first team, making 17 league appearances while contributing 4 goals and 1 assist.
However, like many young talents, his path wasn't straightforward.
He spent much of his time as a substitute, later moved to Belgium on loan, suffered injuries, and had to rebuild his career. Eventually, he found his footing in Austria, where he slowly developed into a top-level player and earned a permanent move to LASK.
As we saw at the World Cup, this guy has serious quality.
He's smooth on the ball, capable of beating defenders in one-on-one situations, and honestly reminds me a little of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in terms of style.
He is comfortable with both feet, can cut inside and finish with his right foot, or go down the line and deliver dangerous crosses with his left.
Since moving to France, he has developed significantly as an attacking player. His movement inside the box has improved, his decision-making in the final third is sharper, and his finishing has become increasingly clinical.
The result?
More goals. More impact. More consistency.
And when it comes to fitness, work ethic, and discipline, there are very few concerns. Japanese players have built a reputation for excellence in those areas, and Nakamura is no exception.
If Michael Carrick is looking for a left winger who can dribble, cross, cut inside, score goals, press relentlessly, and contribute defensively, Keito Nakamura is certainly an intriguing option.
But perhaps the most interesting part of the story is this:
Keito is actually a lifelong Manchester United fan.
When he was just 12 years old, he attended Manchester United's Soccer School program, where young players from around the world were trained under "The United Way" philosophy, focusing on technical skills, teamwork, and the right mentality.
Then, around eight years ago, he told Japanese television that his ultimate dream was to play for Manchester United.
That's why I'm rooting for him throughout this World Cup.
Keep shining. Keep scoring. Keep making people notice.
Because beyond the talent, the goals, and the exciting style of play, there is also a beautiful story behind this player.
His path was never easy.
He left home as a teenager, struggled for minutes, dealt with injuries, went through loan spells, and had to prove himself in leagues that many fans barely paid attention to.
But he never gave up.
Every opportunity became another step forward.
From an unknown Japanese youngster trying to make it in Europe, he has grown into a key player at club level and an important figure for the Japanese national team.
And honestly, if he continues performing at this level, a move to a bigger club feels inevitable.
He has the technique.
He has the pace.
He has the intelligence.
He has the work ethic.
And perhaps most importantly, he has the mentality.
Whether he eventually joins Manchester United or not remains a story for the future.
But wouldn't it be a beautiful football story?
