What occurs to a trait groundplan when the trait isn't expressed anymore in the phenotype? We provided novel insight into the cryptic persistence of a lost trait molecular architecture, driven by gene pleiotropy on other traits and within their co-expression network!

The loss of these proteins during the evolution of Lophotrochozoa may have had implications for the reorganization of the innate immune system response in Trochozoa and other cellular functions related to RNA interference.

Phyla belonging to Trochozoa completely lack DICER2 and AGO1. Other phyla, like Nemertea and Bryozoa, show an intermediate state, having only AGO1. Basal phyla like flatworms and rotifers possess both proteins.
