@WolffintheWild The answer is not that because the post is wrong and farming for clicks and outrage. Not only was Sentimental Value not disqualified of anything, it was literally nominated in all those categories, Best Picture, directing, writing, acting. etc. It's a non issue.

@ale_alejandroid The answer is above if you actually bothered to read. The fact you’re asking me means you skipped over the beginning of this conversation and joined when you felt like it.

Nolan’s film Oppenheimer won 7 Oscars 3 years ago (including Best Picture and Best Director) as a movie without a single prominent non-white character/actor and an almost entirely white production crew
C3@C_3C_3

To be eligible to win Best Picture at the Oscars… 1. At least 1 Non-White/Non-Straight lead or Significant Role. 2. At least 30% minor roles Non-White/Non-Straight people. 3. At least 2 Departments headed by Non-White/Non-Straight people. This is why Nolan did it. Coward.

@souljagoyteller Yes, and look at what awards “sentimental value” was ineligible for because it didn’t meet a DEI quota. That’s the entire point of the post you’re initially replying to, but intentionally trying not to understand.

Most striking thing upon my rewatch of TDWP is that Nate as a character is fine. He’s generally pretty reasonable…it’s Grenier’s wet blanket of a performance what sucks all the life out of him (and the film).

@ArthurKV_ @kylebuchanan For sure, but one of the reasons. The rules of setting screentime limits don't feel realistic so that's why I wonder if this is an attempt to curve it at all.

@ale_alejandroid @kylebuchanan Category fraud rarely happens because an actor has two performances in the same category, it’s usually about a movie using two leads in the same category and not wanting to split votes.

The Oscars just announced some juicy, long-overdue rule changes. One biggie: An actor can now be nominated twice in the same category for separate films, as long as both performances receive enough votes. Also…

@tylekurner It's also an incredible example of how to adapt other work and finding the right tone and zing for the new medium. The book is fine, but the film finds cool new angles that really add to the film.

actually it's a rather solid movie about burnout, 2000s workplace culture (complementary to OFFICE SPACE or whatever), and the tension between editorial and culture
Jesse Hassenger@rockmarooned

They should teach the original DEVIL WEARS PRADA in screenwriting classes. Not because it's well-written but because it's an object lesson in how a movie can stick if you scrounge up a handful of memorable lines and 1-2 good scenes and otherwise do the absolute least.

Even I'll admit it has lulls at the beginning of some seasons (2, 6, 7) but on a rewatch, especially knowing where they were leading up to, they hold up. Weaker Mad Men is still solid television.
