@SamLStandsUp Taking it a step further, if you were to pick him up by his ankles and walk round to your left (for a right footed kicker), could you then put yourself in a better position for a charge down as long as you stay bound (hold of an ankle).

@SamLStandsUp Maybe one of the Saints players could move him back again! Would it technically be classed as a counter-ruck?!

@KevinSpurs @TalkRugbyUnion In any case, scrums are a nightmare to referee, particularly when you have 6 front rowers all likely trying to find an advantage to win a penalty. IMO law changes need thinking about to simplify scrums (and the game in general) and additional training for referees.

@KevinSpurs @TalkRugbyUnion Second point, it’s difficult to tell from the video whether his knee went ‘down’ or just brushed the ground as he was adjusting to the engage before refinding shape. Could also argue that Koch lost the hit and hinged a little, causing Genge to drop his height momentarily.

Gutted! Outstanding from England, reckon we deserved to win that on balance. Nche + Koch changed the game when they came on! But IMO Koch’s angle at that scrum should have seen penalty go the other way. That’s what happens when you’ve won penalties at last 3/4 scrums though 😔

@silvers76 @TalkRugbyUnion Have thought along those lines myself to be honest. I do believe that a law is needed that encourages both teams to scrummage legally and provide a genuine contest. Perhaps if 1st scrum isn’t completed, team putting in gets a free kick (from which they can’t scrum again).

Awesome to have John Wells at our U18 session this evening! Great experience for the boys with detail around maul defence. Valuable learning for coaches too, definitely taken my knowledge of this area forward, though probably not too difficult a task having been a fullback! 🤣

Back to planning tomorrow for the rest of the season and the challenge of running 2 teams and developing around 50 boys of varying levels of experience / ability / potential.

Beaten 28-21 today by a strong Prato team, in what was such a high quality U18 game, both teams would merit a place in the ‘elite’. Undone by a big pack, who got over 3 times from a catch and drive, but proud of the way we played in all other aspects.

Gutting day today. Not really focused on results as a youth coach, as about developing players for their future. However, we have such a talented group this year, qualifying for the national U18 elite competition, would have been a fantastic opportunity for their development.
