@urbanjerry2 I'm primarily talking about California. (But as I understand it, most of NYC's density is also old.)

@urbanjerry2 It's that, but it's also because of excessive single family home zoning.

@jerryc15theman LA and SF are not that densely populated. They barely look like metros, just endless seas of single family home suburbia. There absolutely is a refusal to allow dense housing.

@algorerhythm_ I don’t think it’s a refusal to build. Those places are so densely populated that housing costs are higher. When Covid happened and people had options to work from home, many naturally left the very expensive states and I don’t blame them

@jerryc15theman But blue states are doing a lot wrong with housing. California and New York are growing much slower than Texas and Florida, for example. Democrats will lose a bunch of electoral college votes just between those four states because of their high housing costs and refusal to build.

@algorerhythm_ You were framing this as a good thing as if the blue states did something wrong and red states did something right. In reality this was about real estate developers doing what they always do which is rushing in and creating an oversupply and falling for narratives

@jerryc15theman Ok but still, rents decreased in large part because of an increase in housing supply. Which is something that NIMBYs and degrowthers on the left pretend doesn't happen because "developers are greedy" or whatever.

@algorerhythm_ I’m not saying they haven’t grown still. The problem was that they had massive booms during Covid and developers assumed that would continue. They then overdeveloped all of the cities and population growth stabilized

@jerryc15theman Can you point to a single city on this list that has had a decrease in population over the last 2-3 years? I compared 2020 census numbers to the most recent census estimates I could find, and every city grew at least a little.

@algorerhythm_ lol. These were all the supposed untouchable high flying cities everyone was moving to. It didn’t quite last enough to keep up with all the new supply that went under construction there

@joedinardo Yes, my point is that the NIMBYism and degrowth stuff is much more popular among blue state Democrats than among red/purple state Democrats, to the detriment of blue states and Democrats as a whole.

@algorerhythm_ Local politics play a much bigger role than state politics. I count plenty of blue cities on that list.

@spkanilo Then how do you explain the fact that all 15 cities on that list have had an increase in population since 2020, some by 10% or more? Most of these places are simply building a lot of new housing. More supply = developers/landlords have to lower their prices to compete.

@SoCalCMH I'm counting the anti-capitalism and degrowth stuff as part of the NIMBY mindset x.com/algorerhythm_/…
Tommy@algorerhythm_

@Battledadd By "on the left" I just meant Democrats. NIMBYism, degrowth nonsense and other ideologies that are hostile to the basic truth of "increasing housing supply where there is demand helps to lower rents" are widespread among Democrats, particularly in blue states like CA.

@BronxLaugher I know, but I'm contrasting blue cities (which is most cities) in red and purple states to cities in blue states like New York and the worst offender California, where Democrats can't seem to get their shit together when it comes to housing x.com/algorerhythm_/…
Tommy@algorerhythm_

@weare_theleft No, but local Democrats in purple red states are much better on housing than local and state Democrats in blue states. I don't know why but it's quite obviously the case to me.

@CavDante28 @joecacola Prioritizing undocumented immigrants over American citizens would be a stupid thing for politicians to do because the former can't even vote, so this is not a thing that's actually happening. You're just a racist crank.

@NotADebacle I checked, all of these cities have continued to grow since 2020. Some by 10% or more. If they are "shitholes nobody wants to live in", why are they growing?

@algorerhythm_ NIMBYism isn't really the fundamental problem. The problem is that too many liberals and progressives reject economics, which is to the benefit of NIMBYs, unions, etc.
