That water clarity is an engineering decision, and the math behind it is wilder than the video. Roman aqueducts ran on gravity alone. No pumps, no pressure systems. Engineers carved channels with a gradient so shallow it borders on absurd. The Pont du Gard in southern France drops 2.5 centimeters over 275 meters. That's roughly the thickness of a coin over the length of three football fields. They surveyed that accuracy with plumb lines and wooden leveling instruments. The clarity you're seeing is a direct product of flow velocity. Too steep and the water erodes the channel walls, picks up sediment, turns brown. Too flat and it stagnates. Roman engineers targeted a slope of about 20 centimeters per kilometer, which kept the water moving fast enough to stay fresh but slow enough to stay clear. Before the water reached the city, it passed through multi-chamber settling tanks where velocity dropped near zero. Suspended particles sank. Clean water flowed out the top into the next chamber. Repeat three or four times. Pliny specified the minimum slope in writing. Vitruvius published the exact mortar ratio for hydraulic cement: one part lime to two parts volcanic ash for underwater work. The pozzolana from Pozzuoli reacted with water to form a calcium-aluminum-silicate compound that actually gets stronger the longer it sits submerged. Modern concrete degrades in water. Roman concrete bonds with it. Scale the whole system and it gets harder to process. Eleven aqueducts fed Rome at its peak. Combined output: roughly 1 million cubic meters of water per day. That works out to about 250 gallons per person for a city of one million. Modern New York delivers about 125 gallons per person per day. Ancient Rome had access to double the per capita water supply of the largest city in the United States, running entirely on slope and stone. The Trevi Fountain in Rome is still fed by one of them. Two thousand years, same source, same gravity, same water.

@JazzBulgaria Well how convenient, you just simply don’t recognize minorities! And maybe there wouldn’t be anti-Bulgarian rhetoric if the Bulgarian state didn’t systematically deny Macedonian identity and undermine its existence for decades.

Why should Macedonians acknowledge the Bulgarian minority in their constitution when Bulgaria doesn’t recognize its Macedonian minority, or any minority fir that matter, at all?
JazzBG 🇧🇬🇪🇺🇺🇦@JazzBulgaria

Bulgaria has always supported NM when it mattered: first to recognize their independence, early to ratify their NATO path, help with Kočani… What we ask now is SIMPLE: - respect the EU framework - recognize Bulgarians constitutionally - stop anti-Bulgarian hate

@velikinoldini The Former Yugoslav Republic known as North “Macedonia” is a communist creation that will cease to exist. It’s a communist creation that will be corrected. The Albanians with American and Turkish support should take west of the Vardar River and Bulgaria should annex the east.

Bulgaria is just a scapegoat for the west. The EU does not want expansion, so they are letting Bulgaria shift the goalposts, just like they let Greece do for decades. If there was political will to let MK in, the EU would find a way just like they did for Bulgaria and Romania.
Michael Roth 🇪🇺🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪@MiRo_SPD

First Greece, then France, and now Bulgaria. The result is a disillusioned 🇲🇰 public that no longer expects much from the EU, a nationalist-conservative government, and an EU that has lost credibility. What exactly is wise and forward-looking about this in such dramatic times?

Me: accidentally missed last train in Kyoto. Phone battery: 1%. hotel: on the opposite side of civilization. old taxi driver pulls over, I get in. Driver: Where to? I show address, his smile disappears immediately. Driver: ...ah. never good when elderly Japanese man says “ah” like he just saw prophecy. we drive in silence for ten minutes. then he asks: You know story of this area? Me: No. Driver: Good. refuses to elaborate, rain getting heavier, GPS suddenly loses signal. Driver taps screen aggressively. Driver: Hm. Me: What. Driver: This road appears sometimes. Me: ...sometimes? Driver: Japan has many mysteries. I start calculating if walking in thunderstorm is safer. finally we reach tiny apartment building in middle of nowhere, i pay him. before leaving he leans closer and says: If woman in white asks for directions tonight. Me: ...yes? Driver: Give wrong directions. then drives away into rain like retired anime character.
