Most Indian investors buying US ETFs don’t know this. If you invest in US-domiciled assets like: VOO QQQ US stocks there’s a hidden concept called US Estate Tax. For non-US residents (including Indians), if the total value of US-situated assets exceeds $60,000 at the time of death, the US can impose estate tax up to 40% on the amount above the exemption threshold. That’s one reason many global investors use UCITS ETFs (Ireland-domiciled ETFs) through brokers like Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Examples: VOO → CSPX / VUAA QQQ → CNDX / EQQQ Advantages of UCITS ETFs: No direct US estate tax exposure Better dividend tax efficiency Better structure for long-term international investing But there are trade-offs too. Compared to US ETFs like VOO & QQQ, UCITS ETFs can have: Lower liquidity Slightly wider spreads Smaller options ecosystem More complexity around exchange/currency selection London/European market trading hours For smaller portfolios, directly buying VOO & QQQ is still a very reasonable approach. Why many investors still prefer them: Extremely high liquidity Tight spreads Easier execution Simpler investing experience Better price discovery Strong long-term track record A practical approach can be: Phase 1: Use VOO / QQQ while the portfolio is relatively small and simplicity/liquidity matter more. Phase 2: If the portfolio grows significantly later, evaluate gradually shifting toward UCITS ETFs for better international tax structuring. The important thing is understanding the trade-offs instead of blindly copying what others do. Not financial advice. Just sharing what I learned while setting up my IBKR account as an Indian investor.

If you are doing international investing just to boost returns, you might be disappointed very soon. International diversification is for reduction in risk of portfolio and not necessarily for getting best returns.

After 8-10 crore, your own home and a nice car, there is not much difference in the quality of life between you and billionaire investors like RK Damani. Time is the currency of life. Money is not. Both of you have limited amount of time on earth; infact you may have twice or more time than RK Damani, so you are richer than him. Dal roti is dal roti whether a billionaire eats or you do. Become financially independent, which is around 8-10cr. Have good food. Workout. Sleep well. Meet your parents and friends. That’s all there is to life. Greed has no end. Sooner you figure this out, happier you will be.
